Marigold Colors: Orange, Yellow, Red and White

Marigolds and Día de los Muertos

In Mexican tradition the marigold is a defining flower of Día de los Muertos. The Nahuatl name cempohualxochitl is commonly translated as twenty flowers or many flowers, and the cempasuchil meaning is given the same way. The blooms used on altars are Tagetes erecta, commonly called cempasúchil, native to Mexico.

 

 

The marigold day of the dead association is not decorative: on an altar the flower works. The blooms go on altars called ofrendas, where the bright orange color and strong scent are thought to help the spirits find their way home. Petals are scattered to mark the path.

Marigold or Calendula?

Two different plants answer to the name. True marigolds are Tagetes, native to the Americas. Pot marigold is Calendula officinalis, a separate genus, and the marigold vs calendula difference is not cosmetic.

Order marigolds from a florist and you get Tagetes. Buy marigold seed at a garden center and you can end up with Calendula. It also matters for pet safety. The pet-safety listings that call marigold non-toxic are filed under Calendula officinalis, not under every plant sold as marigold, and Tagetes species can cause mild stomach or skin irritation.

African marigold and French marigold sound like origins, and neither name is one. The genus is native to neither Europe nor Africa. Tagetes erecta picked up the African name after it spread along the North African coast. The variety name on a label tells you the plant's size and form, not where it comes from or what it means.

Do Marigolds Symbolize Death?

Not in the way an American sympathy bouquet does. In Mexico Tagetes erecta is called the flower of the dead, and on Día de los Muertos it marks return rather than loss.
